WWII veteran Leighton "Goro" Sumida remembered at funeral services

A World War II army veteran, whom we’ve interviewed in the past regarding the 100th infantry battalion, has passed away.

Leighton "Goro" Sumida of Aiea was 92 years old.
His memorial service was held Monday night at Hosoi Garden Mortuary.

Sumida was a retired employee of the Navy Public Works Center and Honolulu airport.

Friends say he was funny, friendly, generous, and was still very sharp.

"To say that the club house won’t be the same without him is such a gross misunderstatement," said Stacey Hayashi, a friend who says he was 55 years old when she was born. "People would ask is that you’re granddaughter. He’s like ‘No’ Then they would kind of like what? He would say ‘Oh she’s my older sister."

Sumida is survived by his two sons, his daughter, seven grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
