Greenwood proposes $2M settlement after botched Stevie Wonder concert

A lawyer for University of Hawaii President MRC Greenwood presented a $2 million settlement offer to the Board of Regents and says she has proof of threats from as high up as Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Greenwood’s attorney warned in a settlement offer to the regents they’d owe her $2 million in damages alone if she were fired, but said they’d be willing to settle for the same amount.

The offer was made in the face of what the letter calls "inappropriate pressure from the highest levels for improper political purposes."

The lawyer called a recorded message from Gov. Abercrombie a "threat" in which the governor allegedly said Greenwood would find herself "in the thick of a Senate investigation" if athletic director Jim Donovan were not reinstated.

"The Governor has always acted in the best interest of the state and the university. The Governor did not put any pressure on President Greenwood," Gov. Abercrombie’s Director of Communications and Press Secretary Louise Kim McCoy said. "In fact, when President Greenwood asked the Governor for advice on how to handle the situation at UH, the Governor suggested options to President Greenwood in response to her request."

Greenwood said she also kept text messages from the governor’s chief of staff.
