Space research gets federal funding on the Big Island

The state has awarded millions of dollars to fund space research facilities on the Big Island.

The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems — or PISCES for short — received $2.3 million to help fund programs for space travel.

PISCES will also host robotic rovers competing for the international

Google Lunar-X Prize.

It’s a $30 million competition where privately-funded teams battle to send a robot to the moon.
