UH researchers to study sea-disposed military munitions

Researchers from the University of Hawaii are sending technology to the ocean floor to study sea-disposed military munitions.

A submersible will be taken about 10 miles southeast of Pearl Harbor.

The study expands on research done in the same area years ago.

"Our goal is basically to get down to the munitions, which we mapped in 2011 take a close look at them see what’s living on them what the sediments around them are like try and assess their impact on the local environment," UH principal investigator Dr. Margo Edwards said.

The Army plans to publicly release a report on the data, but it does not expect the report will be ready before Jan. 2015.

The military used the ocean as a dumping ground for munitions between 1919 and 1970.
