The stories of single mothers struggling to raise their families are all too common.
In today’s Laulima story, a single mom is able to scrape by, supporting her four sons with their love and support.
Raising four children is hard enough financially when you have two working parents. Now imagine being a single mom and being the sole provider for a family of five. That’s the story of today’s Laulima family.
Mom is caring for her four sons, ages 3, 8, 12 and 17.
Mom works full-time, but is struggling to make ends meet.
For two years, she and her boys lived in a homeless shelter. Today they are in transitional housing a small studio apartment. It’s tight living quarters, but they are thrilled to a have a place to call their own. They have the bare necessities and all sleep on futons on the floor.
Mom relies a lot on her eldest son. He makes sure his brothers eat breakfast, gets to school, and do their homework. Despite these additional duties, he’s a good student maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and is on the high school football team.
The two younger boys see what other kids their age have and have asked mom why they have so little. Mom tries to reassure her boys that things will get better.
Their caseworker says: The boys "are some of the hardest working and most respectful boys you could meet."
If you’d like to help this family have a brighter Christmas, here is their wishlist:
All four boys could use clothes. The 3-year old loves trucks!
Mom would appreciate a video camera to capture special memories of her children. But ultimately, she just wants her children to have a nice holiday season.
