Manti Te’o named top linebacker in the nation

The Notre Dame linebacker has been named winner of the Butkus Award, selected by a panel of 51 coaches, recruiters, and journalists.

Te’o finished with 103 tackles and seven interceptions in 2012 for the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense.

According to Pro Football Weekly, Te’o received a surprise call from Dick Butkus to congratulate him and will be recognized publicly on Dec. 15.  The professional Butkus Award will be presented in January. The three award winners will be featured in a TV special produced by Pro Football Weekly, which will air in late January.

Te’o is likely to be named a Heisman Trophy finalist later Monday.  The Fighting Irish have a BCS championship game against Alabama on Jan. 7.
