HONOLULU (AP) – It’s nesting season for the nene, the state bird.
So Haleakala National Park is asking the public to be careful while driving around the park and surrounding areas.
Nene pairs are frequenting parking lots and the sides of roads in the park to nest and rear their young. The park says the endangered geese will continue to display this behavior through the end of April.
It’s asking drivers to obey speed limits and use caution.
The park on Maui’s Haleakala volcano has 250 nene birds.
The bird is an endangered species found only in the Hawaiian Islands. There are more than 2,000 remaining in the wild.
Captive breeding programs have helped the species rebound from the 1950s, when there were only 32 birds.
