Closing this fiscal year’s budget gap could include delayed tax refunds for the second year in a row.
The state budget director told KHON2 the option is on the table though not preferred.
One year ago this month, the Lingle Administration announced $275 million in taxpayers’ refunds would not be mailed out until after July 1st.
When submitting his first budget draft back in December, Governor Abercrombie said he would not delay tax refunds, saying at the time it would extend grief and pain.
Budget Director Kalbert Young said refund delays now are an option, though low on the list, but not lowest.
He says more layoffs would be the last resort.
