Investigation underway after toddler dies on Big Island

Big Island police are investigating the death of a toddler in Kailua-Kona as an accident.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. Friday.

A 30-year-old woman on Lamaokeala Street reported she had been watching her 18-month-old son play in a vacant lot.

The woman told police she had turned away for a few seconds and when she looked back, her son was missing.

After searching for about 10 to 15 minutes, the woman found her son floating face down in a plastic tank filled with water.

The toddler was unresponsive when the woman removed him from the tank.

The woman performed CPR on her son until fire department rescue personnel arrived.

The toddler was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 9:30 a.m.

An autopsy will be performed.

Police do not suspect foul play.

The case remains under investigation.
