Department of Public Safety announces new emergency alert system

The manhunt for a murder suspect who escaped from custody is over and now there’s a tool that could help the public just in case there’s another escape.

The Department of Public Safety has launched a new emergency alert system to notify the public through email or text message if another breech happens.

Some criticized the department for not letting the public know sooner that murder suspect Teddy Munet escaped from custody Wednesday morning.

Munet is back in custody at the Oahu Community Correction Center.

To sign up, just text your zip code to "888777" or go to www.nixle.com and follow the sign-up instructions.

Once you are signed up, simply check the box for the Department of Public Safety.
