Action Line Consumer Alert: Top Schemes

It’s something most of us have probably dreamed about — heading to Las Vegas, hitting a big jackpot, and never having to work another day.

"We think that the idea of being able to win a large sum of money is such a grand idea that a lot of consumers are willing to take that risk and give $10, $15, or $20," said Timothy Caminos, Hawaii Better Business Bureau.

And paying a small fee for a shot at a big pay day is probably one of the most popular schemes ever.

"People keep on sending that money in because they want to believe its going to happen. And because people do that, the scammers are going to keep filling out those solicitations. And therefore, we’ll keep seeing it be number one for a long time," Caminos said.

If you have a mortgage you may be the target of another popular scheme.

"Loan modifications, they really became big several years ago when the economic crises kind of happened, and it’s still going on. People are still trying to get out of their bad mortgages, out of their high finance interest rates," Caminos said.

This type of scheme is popular because it preys on your ability to save money.

"And of course this is still a big one because there are still a lot of Hawaii residents that are still trying to recoup losses from several years ago. And get lower interest rates, because interest rates right now they’re much lower than they were three, four years ago," Caminos said.
