Sheriff’s officials say 35-year-old Jeremy Goulet shot Sgt. Loran Butch Baker and Elizabeth Butler while they were questioning him about an apparent sex assault on a co-worker.
"During that interview, Goulet suddenly surprised the officers produced a weapon and shot and killed them within seconds. Goulet did that with his own 35 caliber handgun," said Phil Wowak, Santa Cruz County.
Goulet was later shot and killed by police.
The news came as a shock to Don Wilkerson, who defended Goulet in a 2006 court-martial trial. Goulet was accused of raping two female soldiers while stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield.
"He had been here in Hawaii for one week. He had just been transferred here from somewhere in the mainland. He was accused of a rape and he was taken into custody and confined to Wheeler Army Air Base," Wilkerson said.
It was the second allegation made within two months. Wilkerson says both of the accusations were made after a night of partying.
"They had a big party, there was a drinking, and he was accused of raping one of the young women," Wilkerson said.
But charges were dropped after Goulet agreed to an under other than honorable discharge.
The Army said in a statement, "The serious nature of the misconduct and the circumstances warranting trial by court-martial generally support the appropriateness of a UOTHC discharge."
By accepting this, Goulet dodged life in prison, only to face future problems.
According to the Oregonian, Goulet was convicted of peeping on a 22-year-old woman while she showered.
He later spent two years in prison after assaulting his probation officer.
Goulet’s father, Ronald, told the Associated Press that his son was a ticking time-bomb and that his destructive urges set him on a path toward the deadly final conflict.
