Candlelight vigil honors mother killed in motorcycle accident

A lot of tears and hugs tonight in remembrance of a woman who lost her life this afternoon in a motorcycle accident.

The medical examiner has identified her as 32 year-old Helen Hites of Honolulu.

Around 8:30 p.m. tonight friends of Helen Hites gathered on Thurston Avenue near the scene of the crash.

Hites lived right around the corner.

Police say the woman was riding this motorcycle and crashed into this black dodge charger that had made a left turn.

She was riding with a group and they had just come from a memorial for another a friend.

"I was walking up the street, on Thurston over here, not even half way, and I heard the motorcycles coming up the street started winding, throttle up, and they was winding up, throttling up pretty good, and at the top, there’s a blind spot, and all I heard was a boom.  I knew the motorcycle hit something," said George K. Moses, a witness.

"At this point, speed is a possible factor, and I believe she was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision," said Lt. Robert Towne, Honolulu Police Department. "From what we understand, she was riding with a pack of about three other motorcycles and as you can see there’s a crest we’re looking at so visibility may have been a factor also."

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Friends say Hites leaves behind a young son.
