The incident happened Saturday in the Eden Roc subdivision in Mountain View.
Puna patrol officers responded to the incident at about 3:30 p.m. and determined that the child was playing in a 1993 Dodge pickup truck when he either put or knocked the shifter into gear.
Police say the vehicle started to roll back in the driveway, at which time the boy jumped out and was run over by the vehicle.
The child was taken to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel where he was pronounced dead just after 4:30 p.m.
The boy was identified as Treston S.C. Crowley, of a Hilo address.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Being that this death occurred on private property, it is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.
