Crews put out Maui high-rise fire

Maui firefighters responded to a high-rise fire at the Kaanapali Alii condominiums Wednesday morning.

The fire broke just before 3 a.m. at 50 Nohea Kai Drive.

Upon arrival, crews discovered the fire was in a kitchen of a unit located on the fifth floor.

Officials say a sprinkler system was activated.

Residents were evacuated by security personnel. They were able to return to their rooms at about 5 a.m.

Fire units stayed on scene to help mitigate water damage.

No injuries were reported.

Fire damage to the kitchen is estimated at $5,000.

The case remains under investigation, but officials say the cause appears to be accidental due to faulty electrical equipment.
