City Council approves smoking ban at certain beaches

A measure to ban smoking at certain beaches on Oahu was passed by the Honolulu City Council.

Bill 72 was approved by an 8-1 vote on Wednesday.

The bill would prohibit smoking at several beaches and parks including Kapiolani Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, and Sandy Beach Park.

The bill was introduced last November by City Councilmember Stanley Chang. He says the measure is meant to keep Oahu’s beaches free of cigarette butts and secondhand smoke.

Now, it’s up to Mayor Kirk Caldwell to either approve or veto the bill.
