An Oahu businessman is pedaling his way to success on the streets of downtown Honolulu.
Albert Einstein once said "Life is like riding a bicycle." Kirk Hendricks might argue you haven’t lived life till you’ve ridden a bicycle around Honolulu.
The Oahu resident originally from San Diego moved to Hawaii six years ago.
"So when I came to Honolulu and Waikiki I was very curious why there were no pedicabs," he says.
The paralegal did some research and found out pedicabs were very popular in Waikiki back in the 70′s and 80′s until…
"They were deemed a nuisance…the city council passed an ordinance that banned slow moving vehicles from Kalakaua, Kuhio and the Ala Wai," Hendricks says.
Over a hundred pedicabs disappeared, until earlier this year when Kirk quit his job to start his own business.
"A light bulb went over my head and flashed and I said you know what I would like to bring back an eco-friendly, fun, economical form of transportation," he says. "Lets check out the sights, alright lets go, lets do it…I am the only permitted pedicab in the City and County of Honolulu."
Surprisingly 90-percent of the Honolulu pedicab customers are kamaaina and more than half are women.
"Well obviously you don’t get behind the wheel of a car and so it promotes public safety. I generally I take people that live in the downtown area back to their residences," Kirk says.
For around $5, Honolulu Pedicab provides transportation for up to two people Wednesday through Sunday from downtown to Chinatown to Aloha Tower.
Hendricks says his busiest nights are First Fridays where he averages 40 fares a night.
He plans to expand adding another pedicab in a few months.
