Kailua Beach repairs begin

Work began today on safety improvements at Kailua Beach.

Crews are removing an old sand barrier.

After years of erosion, the metal rebar rusted and became exposed, causing a potential danger to beach-goers.

Kailua resident Mike Brawner observes this issue: "Oh yeah, with that comes and goes it covers back up and sand comes back and then it just goes away again. Right now is as bad as I’ve ever seen it in the last thirty years or so."

Crews will be using sand from a nearby stream to replenish the beach.

The boat ramp will also be repaired during the week-long project.

The parking lot next to the boat ramp will remain closed while work is taking place.
