Labor board to hold public hearing on HSTA

The state and the teachers union still appear far apart on the eve of a hearing on the implementation of a new contract.

The three members of the Hawaii Labor Relations Board will hold a public hearing Wednesday at 9 a.m.

At issue is whether to grant the Hawaii State Teachers Association’s request for relief from the contract imposed by the state, which included a pay cut and bigger share of health benefits.

The governor says the contract is similar to what’s been offered to other unions.

"I think once they take a look at it they’ll see that it’s a very very good contract comparable to everything that we’re doing with the other unions," Abercrombie says.

HSTA says the implementation of the contract violated collective bargaining rules.
