Nurse aid sent to prison for stealing from elderly patient

HONOLULU —  Attorney General David M. Louie announced today that a home-health care aid will spend time in prison for stealing from an elderly woman.  Vevesi Fiso took more than $6,000 from an 80-year old resident of Kahala Nui in early 2010.  Fiso surreptitiously gained access to the victim’s bank account by taking the victim’s ATM card and corresponding password from the victim’s purse.  Fiso also took the victim’s car without permission and damaged the car.

At the time of the theft Fiso was employed by an independent Honolulu health care agency with which the victim had contracted to receive care at the Kahala facility.  Fiso was assigned by the agency to provide services for the victim. The agency that employed Fiso was not involved in the theft.

Fiso pled no contest to the theft in October of 2010.  She fled from Hawai’i prior to her original sentencing date in January of 2011.  Investigators with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit tracked Fiso to Alaska and, with the assistance of the Alaska State troopers, had her arrested and extradited to Hawai’i last month.

Yesterday, Circuit Judge Richard Perkins imposed a six-month prison term and ordered Fiso to pay the victim back.  Fiso will likely be assessed the costs of her extradition and will be deported after her sentence is completed, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Attorney General Louie is pleased with the outcome in this case.  Louie says “Preying on seniors, especially when placed in a position of trust, is shameful.  I’m pleased that we were able to cooperatively work with our sister states to bring this lawbreaker to justice.”

Dawn Shigezawa, of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit prosecuted the case on the people’s behalf.
