Judge upholds 10 year prison sentence for drunk driver

Circuit Court Judge Karen Ahn said she stands behind her original decision to sentence a 21-year old Hauula man to ten years in prison for the death of his friend.

Bryan "Ekolu" Miller’s attorney tried to convince the court to reduce his client’s sentence.

Miller is convicted of first degree negligent homicide for the death of Waika Carvalho in November of 2009.

Miller had a blood alcohol level of 0.19.

“I really am, really am disappointed with what the judge did. You have a young man here first offense in his life,” said Miller’s attorney Bill Harrison.

“I think the helpful thing with the 10 year sentence being upheld is that he will get the necessary help that he needs and monitoring and I think it’ll keep him safe and will keep families from losing loved ones,” said Karlotta Carvalho, Waika’s mother.

Miller’s attorney says he plans to go to the parole board to ask for a very low minimum term.
