Crews are hammering out the final touches and details at the brand new UFC Gym in Kakaako.
"We have four clubs in California this is our first one in Hawaii," says Adam Sedlack, UFC Gym senior vice president.
Partnered with Hilo native and former UFC welterweight/lightweight champion B.J. Penn the massive 37,000 square foot gym takes working out to a whole new level.
"People automatically think we are a fighting gym and we are not. We are all about taking a look at how a UFC athlete trains and we created a gym around that," Sedlack says.
Located at the old Pipeline Cafe location the facility underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and now features top of the line equipment including 82 workout/weight machines, 82 cardio machines and 30 bikes for cycling.
"We have an indoor turf track that is about 35 yards so its like a football field, so guys can do agility work. We have these row machines and the big monster in the house is the octagon, no gym has that here," says UFC Gym general manager Les Tin.
It’s not just about fitness its also about building self esteem and learning self defense.
"We have your typical mixed martial arts you know basic brazilian jiu-jitsu, to wrestling but one of the key programs we have is women’s self defense classes and that is only allowed for the women to take guys cant take that class," Tin says.
The gym will also feature a cafe serving up healthy food, shakes and drinks priced around $5.
Over the past couple of months club officials have hired a hundred employees to staff the facility which also includes a kids gym for keiki 3 and up and interactive kids club.
Existing members are invited to a soft opening Saturday and will open its doors to all other guests on Monday.
