PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) – The infantry battalion of the Army Reserve Unit in American Samoa is experiencing a shortage of soldiers.
Honolulu-based 9th Mission Support Command spokesman Brian Melanephy says recruiters in the U.S. territory and Hawaii are working to fill the shortage of about 90 positions.
The shortage was first revealed last month by Gov. Togiola Tulafono after meetings with commander of the 9th Mission Support Command, which has jurisdiction over the local Army Reserve.
Tulafono suspects the shortage is due to the tough training involved. He encourages residents seeking educational and job opportunities to pursue the military, including the infantry battalion.
There are three Army recruiters based in American Samoa.
