Consumers could have to pay a dime if they want a bag at the checkout stand.
Under a measure heard today by state lawmakers, single-use bag fees of 10 cents could be imposed by next January.
It would go up to a quarter if the statewide distribution of disposable bags does not drop 75 per cent within a few years.
A separate bill that would have imposed a bag tax was researched and drafted by an Iolani High School senior.
"It also empowers the consumer to choose rather than force them to make a positive impact," said high school student John Kaneshiro.
Kaneshiro’s tax bill was deferred but lawmakers say some elements of it may be incorporated into the bag-fee measure being heard again next week.
