Be Green 2: Eco-friendly carpets

It’s something we take for granted nearly every day — the carpet we walk on.

One company is trying to do something to make those carpets more environmentally friendly.

It’s a carpet called Stainmaster Ultra Life and the company claims to be conserving energy and the environment in more ways than one.

"We save about 37 percent energy during the manufacturing process.  Two, it lasts 50 percent longer than most equivalent carpets.  That means you don’t have to send it to the landfills that long,” said Pami Bhullar of Stainmaster.

Many carpet manufacturers recommend cleaning the carpet every couple of years that often entails the use of chemicals.

"Once you install it, for the life of the carpet, as long as you keep it, you will never have to put any chemicals to clean it or any chemicals every time you clean it,” he said.

So far, so good.

Our next question – does the Stainmaster ultra life only come in this one color?

"There are about 25,000 colors to choose from so I think we can probably find one and by the way many of the times, there’s a custom colors program also.  We can actually match the color exactly the way you want it,” he said.

When you go to the website, there is an actual color wheel that offers a fairly comprehensive combinations of colors and fabric styles.  It makes for a fun experiment to see how different rooms in the house would look with varying colors.

Bhullar is also proud of the guarantee the company provides.  There are those manufacturers, he says, which will only make certain guarantees.

"Or this is not covered, that is not covered.  On stainmaster ultra life carpet – which this is a good example right here every single stain imaginable on the face of the earth is covered,” he said.

Bhullar will be at American Carpet One this Saturday to answer all questions regarding Stainmaster Ultra Life carpet.
