Behind the voice of one of Hawaii’s leading jingle performers

Chances are you’ve probably heard her on the radio.

"Star Market it’s a five star experience."

Or as you sit on your sofa watching tv.

"Primary properties."
"Trusted agents proven results."

This 35 year-old Mililani resident has sung her way into the hearts of many as one of Hawaii’s leading vocalists and jingle performers.

" Hi I am Maila Gibson with Napa Auto Parts."

"Jingles and commercials started maybe 7-8 years ago and Ben had a lot to do with it because he does a lot of jingles himself."

The dynamic performing duo Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson have been creating beautiful music together for about a decade.

We perform at a lot of weddings we perform at Gordon Biersch at the Disney Aulani."

Maila started singing at the age of 9.

"And so I got up and sang a Whitney Houston song and they were all like oh my gosh did you know that you can sing and I was like I know that I like to sing."

Born in Jefferson City, Missouri to a caucasian father and a local mother, Maila and her two sisters grew up on the mainland but always called Hawaii home.

"So right out of high school I jumped ship and moved to Hawaii."

On Kauai, in 1995 Maila competed in a local singing contest, losing the competition would change her life forever.

"I remember thinking maybe I just shouldn’t sing anymore or I must not be very good at it."

Thankfully local talent scout Art Umezu heard her and offer her the chance to sing in Japan. That’s where Maila recorded the first of her three albums.

Fast forward eight years Maila captured 2 Hawaii Music Awards and a Na Hokuhanohano award.

"Music is my full time career."

In addition to performing Maila is also a teacher.

"Keep more of a nun instead of moving to noon."

Two years ago she started teaching voice in Waipahu.

"The most challenging thing that I’ve done in my career because I feel such a responsibility for these young ones and for their gifts and voices but at the same time its so rewarding."

"When you do something you love for a living you will never work a day in your life and I really do feel that way."
