Big Island fire department says 15 patients along with the staff at the Kau hospital have been evacuated due to smoke from a brushfire near Pahala.
They have been transported to the Naalehu Community Center.
It’s burned 600 acres so far and closed Mamalahoa Highway between mile markers 50 and 51.
The national weather service says wind and dry conditions are playing a role in this fire
