According to officials, the incident happened near the 107-mile marker in South Kona Tuesday evening.
Traffic investigators say Jasmin Robertson, 30, was sitting on the northbound lane of the highway when she was struck by a 2003 BMW two-door sedan.
Robertson was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where she later died.
The driver of the BMW, a 50-year-old Captain Cook man, was not injured.
It is unknown at this time if speed, drugs, or alcohol were involved on the driver’s part.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have opened a negligent homicide investigation.
This is the Big Island’s 36th fatality for 2012, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
