Representative John Mizuno drafted house bill 2288.. that would require internet service providers to save every Hawaii web subscriber’s data and browsing history for a minimum of 2 years.
The Honolulu Police department and Honolulu city prosecutors office were behind the bill.. saying it would help law enforcement gather evidence against cyber criminals.
However… civil-rights groups.. and internet service providers.. including the city’s own information technology department were against the bill.
Civil rights groups said the bill was too broad and there were privacy concerns.
The internet service providers said it would be too expensive to store all of that data.
And after hearing those arguments.. reviewing thousands of e-mails and hundreds of phone calls… Mizuno has asked the committee to defer the measure indefinitely.
