Officials at the UH Army ROTC program identify him as 22-year-old Sione Lefao, a cadet in the program who recently transferred from American Samoa.
Although he was only at UH for a short time he was popular with fellow cadets and instructors.
"He had that contagious smile that you know as an instructor he’s sitting in the back smiling and I’m looking like ‘hmm; what’s going on back there?’ but real great kid, great kid," said Maj. James Barros, Lefao’s instructor.
Lefao paddled to the Mokulua Islands Saturday with friends and was standing on some rocks when a wave swept him away.
A memorial will be held on Friday at the UH Newman Center.
