Bone fragment found appears to be Native Hawaiian

The single bone fragment found along Honolulu’s rail route last month appears to be from a leg bone of a Native Hawaiian.

At an Oahu Island Burial council meeting on Wednesday, Native Hawaiian descendants challenged rail authority to ensure proper cultural practices for iwi discoveries.

They asked that burial practitioners be present at all future testing sites.

"The only remnants of that ike, that kuleana, that role that they played while they were on this earth, is their bones," said Kamuela Kalai.

"As long as I am am the executive director of HART, we will respect iwi kupuna," said Dan Grabauskas, HART CEO.

HART CEO Dan Grabauskas has agreed to work directly with family members to implement a cultural monitoring program.

A budget for compensation of the consultants has not yet been set.
