Three and half years ago, these tall breadfruit trees could barely be seen on the grounds of the Women’s Correctional Center in Kailua.
Now, they are thriving thanks to a partnership with the prison, the Garden Club of Honolulu and the Breadfruit Institute.
"It’s a project at the prison to have them be more self-sufficient to be able to produce more of their food and ulu breadfruits an important Polynesian and pacific crop," says Dr. Diane Ragone, Breadfruit Institute director.
"It gives me the chance to learn about different plants and different trees what I can do if I’m ever on the outside," says Cheyenne Rosa, inmate.
The pilot project began in 2008.
The trees grown by the inmates were featured as an exhibit at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
