Candidates for honolulu mayor squared off

Mayoral candidates put their messages for votes through a developers lens in a discussion before a commercial real estate group called NAIOP friday morning.

"It’s about infrastructure,it’s about the building and character of our city, and it’s about the legacy that we will leave the future generations" says Cayetano.

"The best place for affordable housing is near a train station where households can save on gas and transportation costs particularly those people who are financially challenged" stated Carlisle.

"I believe that it’s about building housing for generations to come, it’s for our children and grandchildren, and this housing is affordable" stated Caldwell.

Candidate Kirk Caldwell said that when pointing out his support for developments at Koa Ridge and Hoopili

"If we do not control where housing goes we will need twenty-on more koa ridges by the year 2050 so I believe we must develop the city’s urban core."

Incumbent mayor peter carlisle made that point in defense of transit oriented development or T.O.D. That proponents say focuses density around train stations instead of consuming raw undeveloped acreage.

"I think neil abercrombie is onto something with his one building going to 650 feet – I ask why not more of that in the urban core?"

"If you go and google TODs you’ll find most of them are heavily subsidized by the government whether it be the city or the state" say Cayetano.

"The city cannot issue permits for TOD development, why? Because the sewer system is not up to speed"

Cayetano repeated his pledge to stop rail and try to get the money set aside for it for an alternate transit plan and infrastructure.

"They’re stuck on rail, they can’t get extra money to infuse into the sewer and water system, that’s their problem, we’re going to take this rail system down."

"He talks like he’s the godfather — he’s going to go up to the legislature and make a deal they can’t refuse, he’s served in the legislature and I have too. You think they’re going to say sure mayor, we’ll give you the money, you take 2/3rds we’ll keep 1/3rd."

"I’d like to say none of my plans involve going to the legislature, going to the city council is more than enough."
