Canoe team holds project to remove invasive species

It’s a clean up that’s worth $20,000.

The Kailua Canoe Club held a project on Sunday to remove mangroves near the Ka’elepulu Stream. The stream is the team’s main practice area.

The project was funded by two grants. The Hawaii Community Foundation provided funds for the removal and disposal of the mangroves. The second grant came from the Castle Foundation, which will reward the canoe club $20,000 towards the purchase of a new canoe, after they remove the mangroves.

Work days have been held monthly since April 2011.

Mangroves are invasive species in Hawaii. They’re mainly found near shorelines.
