The man who was the focus of a Crimestoppers alert — wanted for allegedly stabbing his grandmother — was captured last night on the UH Manoa campus.
19 year-old Charles Kealii Amoy was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.
Amoy’s grandmother, Aileen, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after police say she was stabbed multiple times.
Neighbors say she is fighting for her life and has shown some signs of improvement- she is now listed in serious condition.
UH students living in the Gateway Dormitory were shocked to learn that a man wanted for attempted murder was hiding from police there.
"It was kind of scary, I didn’t know he was on the 5th floor because that’s where I live," said Allyson Franco, UH student.
Police arrested 19 year-old Charles Kealii Amoy just before 6 p-m yesterday.
Witnesses say he was found in his ex-girlfriends dorm room.
"We seen all the police and lights and everything, and the cop was talking to this girl and she started crying and she mentioned his name, and I was like..I know who that is," said Franco.
Franco was in the same UH program as Amoy for the past two years and noticed his behavior becoming erratic.
"Throughout the year, things was changing with him, something was wrong with him, we didn’t know what was going on," explained Franco.
She said classmates were growing frustrated with him because he was constantly asking for help on his schoolwork…
"He’d get really (mad) and just dart off and throw a rampage outside."
Amoy was also arrested for theft in the fourth degree and released from custody on October 12 of this year.
Neighbors say he hasn’t been the same since.
"I think something went jam him up when he was in there. While he was in there, he bit through the pinky, all the way to the bone I think he tried to hurt himself too," said Peter Pulido, neighbor.
They say his grandma was one of the only people who took him in and kept trying to get through to him.
"Considering the things that was going on with him, some people, you know, just fed up, they throw in the towel, but she always was there to support him, you know, whatever he needed ," said Pulido.
A motive for the stabbing, is still unclear at this time.
"That was the last thing on my mind.. for him to do something like that," said Franco.
Police say Charles Amoy is also in the hospital at this time.
Neighbors say he had an appointment yesterday to get his finger amputated after his injuries from jail, so they believe that is what he is being treated for.
