Chong named Hawaii House majority leader

HONOLULU (AP) – Speaker Calvin Say has named Rep. Pono Chong to be the new majority leader of the state House of Representatives.

Chong will replace Blake Oshiro, who resigned to become Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s deputy chief of staff. Say said in a statement Monday that Oshiro recommended that Chong replace him.

The Legislature is currently not in session, so Say appointed Chong in the interim. The House will hold a vote on whether to formalize Chong’s appointment when lawmakers return for a new legislative session in January

Chong represents the Windward Oahu neighborhoods of Maunawili, Olomana, Enchanted Lake, and Kaneohe.

The Democrat is currently majority whip and vice chair of the Housing Committee.
