City Council candidate says campaign laws were violated

The outcome of a Honolulu City Council race that appeared to have been decided could be in limbo before the Supreme Court.

Martin Han is contesting his loss to Joey Manahan in District seven alleging Manahan and house candidate Romy Cachola visited absentee voters’ homes and told them how to vote.

Han alleges this resulted in a record number of mail-in votes for both candidates.

He also alleges Manahan attempted to influence voters by leaving banners inside and outside the entrances of polling locations, which would violate campaign laws.

Manahan said in a statement quote:
I am absolutely confident we won fair and square. Our campaign has always been transparent, and I am sure that the office of elections will find no violations."

The Hawaii Supreme Court is expected to issue summons on the case within the week.
