According to officials, the incident was reported at about 8:30 a.m. An ENV crew arrived just after 9 a.m. and secured the site at 12:30 p.m.
City officials say a six-inch terra cotta pipe broke at 1812 Hunnewell Street causing an estimated 1,275 gallons of untreated wastewater into a storm drain, which leads to the Ala Wai Canal.
ENV crews were able to utilize Vactor trucks and recover 3,500 gallons and discharge it downstream back into the system for proper treatment.
A portion of Hunnewell Street is closed between Vancouver Drive and Seaview Avenue to allow a construction crew to repair the pipe.
ENV notified the state Department of Health, while signing and water sampling are under way.
The public should stay out of the Ala Wai Canal until Warning signs are removed.
