A project to cut down several trees deemed a safety hazard along Hawaii Kai Drive is now on hold.
Contractors started work Monday morning, planning to cut down five trees and prune the roots and branches of two others.
The city says they were a safety concern, and were affecting the sidewalks.
Residents were upset, saying they were never told of the city’s plan.
"They’re decades old and you know during the spring they’re covered with yellow flowers and they’re beautiful. Do we really need to cut all these trees down and if we do how come theres been no communication with the public?," said Hawaii Kai resident Malia Zimmerman.
The city says they do not usually notify the public when they cut trees down that pose a hazard.
For now, they have stopped the cutting and plan to make a presentation about the changes at next week’s neighborhood board meeting.
