Coffee pest spreads to another part of the Big Island

A coffee pest that’s impacting farms on the Kona Coast has been found in another area of the Big Island.

The Department of Agriculture says the Coffee Berry Borer has now been found in a Ka’u farm.

The area on the slopes of Mauna Loa is becoming more popular for coffee growing.

Tests are now underway to determine the extent of the infestation in Ka’u.

The borer was first found in Kona last September and has spread to numerous farms on the coast.

It reduces the quantity and quality of coffee beans.

An insect killing fungus is being used to try and control the infestations and stop the spread.
