Column: Higher conveyance tax would be unfair

A measure that would restructure Hawaii’s conveyance tax — a one-time tax that the state of Hawaii levies on the transfer of property from one owner to another — is currently making its way through the state Legislature. We fully support restructuring Hawaii’s conveyance tax, but we would like to see it done so in a manner that doesn’t unfairly burden homeowners or inadvertently increase the cost of housing. Therefore, we oppose Senate Bill 3048 as written.
