The President of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers says the outpouring of support for officer Eric Fontes and his family has been overwhelming.
Fontes was killed when a truck plowed into a traffic stop near the Ko Olina Resort shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday night.
He was pronounced dead at Pali Momi Medical Center.
"Pali Momi last night, easily 60 officers, when they heard about it they came by to pay their respects for Eric and his wife Liane," Maafala said.
Maafala went on to say how much Fontes was liked by fellow officers, "And far as being a police officer he was definitely one of the great officers out there. His beat partners loved him because he brought joy to work."
Fellow Officer Sam Scanlan was critically injured.
He is now listed in critical, but stable condition at the Queen’s Medical Center. "Officer Scanlan wasn’t aware of the condition and what had happened to Officer Eric Fontes, and when he did find out it really shattered him, it hurt him deeply", Maafala said.
Maafala said the Honolulu Police Department will carry on Fontes’ legacy, "This is the 43rd in the line of duty death for the Honolulu Police Department, 43, one too many if you ask me."
Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha is expected to hold a press conference at noon at HPD main headquarters.
