Cyclist hospitalized after crashing into pedestrian

On Kauai, a cyclist is hospitalized with head injuries after striking a pedestrian that was crossing the road.

It happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of Kahuku and Wyllie roads in Princeville.

According to Kauai officials, the 47-year-old cyclist was heading east on Kahuku Road when he struck a pedestrian crossing the road in a marked crosswalk.

Officials say the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and reportedly sustained major injuries to the back of his head.

He was taken to Wilcox Hospital for medical treatment where he remains.

Officials say the 23-year-old pedestrian sustained abrasions to his arms and hands and was able to take himself to the hospital for treatment.
