Damien quarterback done with football after suffering concussion

The quarterback of Damien Memorial School is looking forward to going home.

Alan Mohika spoke publicly for the first time Monday morning since suffering a severe concussion Friday night in a football game against Moanalua High School.

The 17-year-old does not remember being hit as he threw a touchdown pass.  In fact, he says doesn’t recall the game at all.

"I remember the locker room before the game.  Being with my teammates, talking with them," said the senior quarterback.  "I remember warming up with specialists, warming up my arm but I don’t remember the game."

Initially, Mohika jumped to his feet and celebrated but then moments later collapsed on the sidelines after having a seizure.  Mohika’s mother said her son had no pulse and was not breathing.  A parent who is a nurse performed CPR until paramedics arrived.  He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition where he remained in the intensive care unit until Sunday.

It’s still unclear when he’ll be released.  As for football, Mohika says he’s done for the season.

"No, I’m done for the season.  It might get worst if I play," he said.  "Feel a lot better hopefully get stronger to come back and support my team and be on the sidelines with them."
