Editorial: Build better rural care off fed grant

Hawaii has secured a $188.9 million federal grant to jump-start the Hawaiʻi Rural Health Transformation Plan (RHTP) — and that’s a welcome bit of good news for neighbor island communities. Hawaii’s voters and government are supportive of public health initiatives and health services for all, but facilities serving low-income and rural communities often struggle to meet contemporary standards, maintain facilities and retain staff. This planning grant seeks to break the cycle of precarity, and the state must use it to build local capacity, and to increase accessibility and quality for urban and rural residents alike.
