Elderhood Project: Changes to "Aging in Place" workshop

The 5th annual "Aging in Place" workshop will take place this Saturday at the Ala Moana Hotel.

There will be some slight changes in this year’s workshop.

In the past, the workshop began with a major opening session.  This year, the smaller workshops will commence first thing.  One of those workshops will involve estate planning, an area of increasing concern.

"This group did a study of 3,250 estate plans and what they found out was and these are estate plans that lawyers wrote 7 out of 10 failed,” said attorney Stephen Yim.

Yim says, for the most part, mistakes were not made by lawyers.

Instead, family members did not communicate with parents or each other about what to expect.

"We really have to shift the way that we think and focus on relational topics and that’s really where all of us as attorneys in our profession really want to focus on,” said Yim.

Also featured, a workshop on senior living with an emphasis on aging in place.

"At 15 Craigside, we’re a continuing care retirement community.  We offer all options for seniors – everything from independent living like us, we don’t need any assistance to a little bit of assistance in your apartment, what we call assisted living, all the way to nursing care,” said Suzie Schulberg of 15 Craigside.

Schulberg and her colleagues will cover a wide variety of topics relating to senior living.  "What our mission is, is to actually educate people and give them the options that are available, not only with communities but also if a senior decides to stay at home.  What are the options available to them?"

Perhaps the most attractive part of the day long workshop – it’s free!

"They don’t have to sign up for anything, just come in.  We’ll give them a little flier, they can actually go to the Elderhood Project at your KHON2 web site, there will be a listing of all the workshops there.  They can just come and go,” said Percy Ihara of Generations Magazine.
