Elderhood Project: Prime Time Senior Fair

Next Thursday, hundreds of seniors will go to the Blaisdell for the 19th annual First Hawaiian Bank Prime Time Senior Fair.

It’s a chance to learn more about living well.

Seniors have been learning crafts like ceramics and pottery here at the Makua Alii center.  Many of these will be on display at the Prime Time Senior Fair.  But there will be much more.

"And the things that we’ve thrown into the fair this year, come on in and learn how to choose your vegetables from the market, we’ll have cooking demonstrations on how to cook the vegetables from the market," says Steven Santiago of the Honolulu Parks & Recreation Department.

Pottery is just one of the classes offered by Honolulu Parks and Recreation.  Santiago sees this as an outlet for some seniors.

"A lot of people see themselves getting older, getting out of work and their life slows down.  We like to say, hey, it’s the prime time.  Now you have some extra money, you also have some extra time on your hands.  Why not make use of it," he says.

There will also be the opportunity for seniors to check on their health.

"For the health screening, Kuakini Medical center will be there.  They’ll be doing your glucose testing, your blood testing, your blood pressure testing and then they’ll give you recommendations on anything you need to be tested," Santiago says.

One of the primary benefits of going to the prime time fair is for seniors to socialize with others.  As far as the medical advantages of being tested, it works for all of us.  The longer our kupuna stay healthy, the better it is for all of us.

Once again, the First Hawaiian Bank Prime Time Senior fair begins at 8:30 next Thursday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
