Ewa Makai Middle School and Hawaii Preparatory Academy were two of 78 schools in the U.S. to be named a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
They were recognized at a national ceremony in Washington, D.C., on June 4.
U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools is a federal recognition program that opened in September 2011.
Honored schools exercise a comprehensive approach to creating "green" environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to students.
In addition to Ewa Makai and Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Pahoa High & Intermediate and Waikiki Elementary were the other two Hawaii nominees for national recognition.
Kalani High and Kahuku High & Intermediate were also recognized by the Hawaii State Department of Education for their energy conservation and environmental efforts.
