Explosion sends metal shrapnel through East Oahu home

Police are looking for someone who rocked an East Honolulu neighborhood by detonating what appears to be a homemade bomb.

It happened last Wednesday, and the suspect or suspects are still on the loose.

The explosion did some damage to a home in Kuluouou Valley.

Although no one was injured, it sure was a close call for a woman and her baby.

"That’s what it sounded like, boom!"

Ann Sutton still can’t believe what happened.

She had been sitting in this chair with her 8-month old daughter Kaci early Wednesday morning.

"Around 2:30 I thought she was sleeping so I went upstairs, I took her upstairs."

Then two minutes later…

"I was upstairs right by the window and there was an orange flash, boom! I looked outside, there was stuff smouldering, and this car drove away."

Downstairs, there was glass everywhere.

"And I saw the hole in the window and it spidered all the way up."

Someone had set off what appears to be a homemade bomb on Kuliouou Road, right in front of their home.

"Here’s where it was, because there was duct tape and everything here."

The explosion sent this metal piece flying through their living room window.more than 20 feet away.

"That’s the window we just got it replaced today."

The window, which is right next to the chair where Ann had been sitting with Kaci only two minutes earlier.

"I thank God."

Ann’s daughter Alyssa showed us what she found across the street.

The Suttons moved into this home only a month ago.

"The police didn’t seem to think it was a targeted thing, seems more random than anything but scary nonetheless."

No one has been arrested yet in connection with the case.

"I just think if they realize that she could’ve got hurt seriously hurt, that maybe they wouldn’t do it again."

If you have any information that can help detectives with this case, call Honolulu police.
