Family of man stabbed to death in prison cell files lawsuit

The family of a Hawaii man stabbed to death while serving time at an Arizona prison has filed a lawsuit.

Bronson Nunuha died after being attacked in his prison cell by two gang members. They had entered after a prison employee left the door unlocked.

The lawsuit alleges that the state acted negligently by leaving him at the Saguaro Correction Center in Arizona, and that the prison violates safety requirements.

Nunuha was just a few months away from being released.

"He wanted to do the best that he could, get a job, get back into the community – you know, the society – and try to make things right with his child," said Nunuha’s mother, Davina Waialae.

The Department of Public Safety was reviewing the lawsuit and could not comment on the specifics.

But did say they are saddened by the tragic situation and are working on ways to improve the prison system.
